A common SIEM failure is collecting everything and responding to nothing. Value comes from use cases—not raw terabytes.
First sources: identity (suspicious success/fail), VPN, firewall/edge, EDR, and sensitive finance/identity systems—then expand.
Parsing and field normalization are half the win. Events without clear user, IP, time, and action are useless for triage.
First 5–10 use cases: brute force, privileged account creation, unusual geo login, critical EDR, access-policy changes, and VPN anomalies.
For each use case define owner, severity, action, and runbook—otherwise dashboards become decoration.
After initial stability, hunting and purple teaming raise detection quality. SIEM is not an end state—it is an improvement loop.
